and six council members who are elected for four years. The City Council
appoints a City Manager who heads the municipal government.
The economy is primarily related to tourism, local services and governmental functions. |
Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist Church retreat.
It was incorporated on July 16, 1889 and became a charted city on April
22, 1927.
Pacific Grove was the last non-alcoholic or 'dry' city in California until 1969 when the city council adopted an ordinance repealing prohibition. Pacific Grove is called 'Butterfly Town USA' because of the annual Oct-March migration of the Monarch Butterfly. |
