Pacific Grove has a Council-Manager form of Government. The 7 member City Council consists of a mayor, who is elected to a  2 year term and six council members who are elected for four years. The City Council appoints a City Manager who heads the municipal government.

The economy is primarily related to tourism, local services and governmental functions.

Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist Church retreat.  It was incorporated on July 16, 1889 and became a charted city on April 22, 1927.

Pacific Grove was the last non-alcoholic or 'dry' city in California until 1969 when the city council adopted an ordinance repealing prohibition.

Pacific Grove is called 'Butterfly Town USA' because of the annual Oct-March migration of the Monarch Butterfly.
